In the summer of 2025, we were invited to visit the Carlos Simon Foundation. But what exactly is the Carlos Simon Foundation, and what does it do? Based in Valencia, Spain, the Carlos Simon Foundation for Research in Women’s Health is a non-profit organization that strives to improve healthcare for women. Directed by Prof. Carlos Simon and David Jimenez, this organization is built upon three pillars: basic research, clinical translation, and education. From researching women’s health to educating future medical professionals, these three pillars are the basis of the work done at the foundation.
The main goals of this foundation go hand-in-hand with the three pillars. The first of the three pillars is basic research: the primary studies conducted on a subject to obtain a deeper understanding and facts about a topic. By doing basic research, you get the information you need to start developing new treatments and discoveries. Secondly, we have clinical translation. It sounds complicated, but it’s really just where discoveries become things we can use to help actual patients and can find in hospitals. Lastly, we have education. As its name suggests, the Carlos Simon Foundation is dedicated to educating the next generation of doctors, clinicians, and researchers.
How do some of the main goals of the foundation connect with the pillars? The foundation has many camps, symposiums, instruction programs, and congresses. They hope to inspire younger generations and teach them about women’s health. This shows how this goal links to the pillar of education. The Carlos Simon Foundation is also hoping to create biotech companies to provide solutions for many diseases and issues in women’s health. This relates to clinical translation, as companies allow them to implement their inventions in hospitals.
Visiting this foundation has helped us learn a lot and opened our eyes to the foundation’s innovative projects and research! To learn more about the foundation, visit their website, which features a range of projects and research papers.
